Adult Learners` Week - 15th - 21st May 2010

What are you doing for Adult Learners' Week this year? Adult Learners` Week is now in its 19th year and encourages thousands of adults, whatever their age and background, to give learning a go.

Each year a wide range of organisations and individuals from across the region celebrate learning, recognising the achievements of individuals, families, groups and projects. Many celebrate the week by organising events and activities that encourage people to take part in different learning opportunities.

The week starts with a Cultural Diversity weekend. During the week there is also a "Learn at Work" Day and a "Silver Surfer" Day. Both days give people the opportunity to learn something new, to build on existing skills and for organisations to showcase their work.

During Adult Learners Week 2009, 53% of the people who attended an event and 70% of people who called the Careers Advice helpline took up some kind of learning activity because of the campaign.

Awards are also made to learners, recognising and celebrating the achievements of extraordinary adults who have transformed their lives for the better, and who can inspire others to give learning a go.

Nominations can be made up to 5pm on 29th January 2010 by going online to http://www.alw.org.uk/learning-awards/ where you can also find out more about the week as well as read the 2009 winners stories and find out how you can become a sponsor of Adult Learners Week 2010.

The East Midlands has co-ordinators for the different counties, who would be pleased to work with you - they are

Carol Anne Taylor (Leicestershire)

Colette Byrne (Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire)

Sally Furness (Derbyshire)

Wendy Bond (Lincolnshire)

Adult Learners` week is an opportunity to celebrate learning and the achievements of learners; it is also a week to celebrate the contribution made by teaching and support staff, by staff in organisations that encourage and support people to "have a go" and get involved in learning and by the families and friends who also support and encourage them.

For more information contact Carol Anne Taylor, or one of the co-ordinators named above or visit the website www.alw.org.uk
