Colleges Week

The second Colleges Week took place in November 2009 and the central theme was "Colleges Creating Opportunity".

New College Nottingham (ncn)
The week began with a visit from top Japanese video games designer, Keita Takahashi, who talked to 80 Media and IT students about the video games industry at ncn Clarendon.

During the week six Construction students renovated Hyson Green Youth Club through a project organised by the Volunteering team. The group of trainee carpenters, joiners, tilers and plasterers worked to restore the fitness suite and improve the overall look of the building, to create a better environment for the young people that use it.

West Nottinghamshire College (WNC)
West Nottinghamshire College used targeted media relations to generate coverage using case studies to demonstrate the ways in which the college transforms lives and helps businesses. Throughout the week local radio station, Mansfield 103.2, broadcasted a daily piece about Colleges Week following its hourly news bulletins.

Nottingham Evening Post published two WNC case studies and one from New College Nottingham in the education pages on 11 November. You can read the online story by clicking here

The Mansfield Chad published an on-line piece, which you can read by clicking here

Leicester College
The college organised a range of activities happening at some of its outreach centres as they were promoting this provision during the week. Based in the heart of local communities, this provision supports individuals in developing their skills on a range of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses.

There was a Leicester Police Constabulary Roadshow at the Ross Walk outreach centre and the press release for the week was about a Leicester College student who aspires to join the police force.

Chesterfield College
As part of its Colleges Week celebrations, Chesterfield College hosted a Q&A dinner designed to give students the opportunity to converse with local employers. Students used the session to swap ideas with them, discuss work experience and employment opportunities as well as learn what it takes to work in specific industries.

A wide variety of local organisations attended the event, including representatives from Chesterfield Football Club, Chesterfield Rotary Club, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue, Bosch Thermotechnology Ltd and North East Derbyshire District Council.

Derby College
The Derby Evening Telegraph carried an article from college Principal David Croll. Among the activities that took place for Colleges Week Horticulture students at the college`s Broomfield Hall campus put the finishing touches to a special garden they have created for children at nearby Morley Primary School.

This is a perfect example of College staff and students working within communities to improve the quality of life for local people and it was therefore very appropriate that the garden has been finished during Colleges Week.
