Master Classes to Raise Skills across the East Midlands

A hairdressing masterclass was the first of over 60 master classes to be held across the East Midlands with the rest planned over the coming months. The aim of the classes is to inspire talented young people to improve their vocational skills and learn about opportunities in their chosen career.

Students experience first-hand demonstrations by expert tutors and managers in a variety of sectors from IT, hair and beauty, hospitality and catering, construction, engineering, carpentry, plumbing, early years natural learning through to business administration. Students chosen to attend the master class will gain an insight into working at the highest levels in their professions.

Stephenson College hosted a hairdressing master class with over 150 guests attending the successful event. There were able to attract a high profile London-based celebrity stylist Sean Dawson - a great opportunity for students to see a hairdressing master at work.

UK Skills coordinator, Lee Croucher, said: "I was delighted that Stephenson College were able to offer this excellent opportunity to potential competitors. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone involved in organising this event, which truly inspired the participants. Plans are already in place to offer further master classes shortly."

The LSC fund the programme of UK Skills master classes, Karen Woodward, regional skills director, LSC East Midlands said: "The UK participates in prestigious vocational skills competitions and it is hoped that some of these learners may have the opportunity to compete at a national level in the UK World Skills competitions or to represent our country at the next World Skills event in 2009. These master classes can be a stepping stone to global competitions and are an exciting opportunity for young people."
