Rutland County Council (RCC) is one of the first councils in the East Midlands to sign the 'Skills Pledge' - a voluntary commitment to raise skills within the local area and the local authority.

The Skills Pledge is an agreement to support anybody who wishes to develop their basic skills, including literacy and numeracy, and working towards relevant qualifications to at least Level 2 (the equivalent of five good GCSE passes).

Helen Briggs, chief executive of RCC and Councillor Roger Begy OBE, leader of RCC, signed the pledge in the presence of Nick Rashley, area director, LSC Lincolnshire and Rutland.

Councillor Begy, who is also the Chair of the LSC Lincolnshire and Rutland, commented: "The staff at RCC are vital to the council's work and as such, we need to ensure that as we develop new ways of working and introduce new systems, the backup is there for anybody who requires specialist training."

Helen Briggs says: "I am delighted that Rutland County Council has been able to lead from the font with the Skills Pledge by being one of the first councils in the East Midlands to sign up. There is a huge benefit to the local economy and the wider future of our county in having a workforce that is constantly improving and building on existing skill levels".

Nick Rashley, said:

"We'd encourage organisations of all sizes from across the East Midlands to sign up to the Skills Pledge. By making a commitment to the Skills Pledge employers have access to a Train to Gain skills broker, through whom they can access funding to train their staff as well as well as approved training providers.
